The Science of Movement

The science of movement introduces energy and how this relates to our physical body. Albert Einstein's equation E=mc2 describes the truth that everything is energy. So the question could be asked, "What does this mean for us and the movements we make with our physical body?"
As everything is energy, every movement that we make
is a movement of energy. A movement is every thought, word, action...everything. Every time our body moves there is a quality of energy that is flowing through it, which is then magnified by that movement. For example, if we move our body in the quality of gentleness, this is the quality that is then distributed and expanded throughout our entire body – through every cell, muscle, organ and so on. Or in contrast, if we move in tension, anxiety or anger, this quality then magnifies and intensifies with each and every movement throughout the body.

The quality of energy that we move with
has a direct impact on our body and how we feel. In gentleness we start to feel the natural intricacies of our physical body, like the movement of our eyelids over our eyes, the delicateness of our touch and the quality of each step and movement we make. We can become more aware of the affect energy has on our body, health and well-being, and our expression with others.
In contrast, if we are in anger this too magnifies and turns into tension. This tension can be felt in the shoulders, neck, liver – every part of the body starts to harden and contract due to the quality of energy that is flowing through it. In this quality we receive thoughts of issues, problems and defensiveness, and are in the illusion that we are separate from others and alone. |
Sources of Energy
There are effectively two types or sources of energy that can enter our body:
1. Fiery / Soulful Energy
This is our natural source of energy for expression that is in abundance and sustains and nourishes our body and our being. When we choose this energy there is a vitality, joy, harmony and freedom in movement and expression.
|
2. Pranic Energy
This is the physical source of energy that our body uses to construct the physical building blocks of the human body. While prana is needed for the physical body, it is not designed to be used as a source of expression. Prana is an energy that is used for physical functioning, however when expressed it separates us from our fiery/soulful expression.
|
Simply put, when we choose to express with the energy of prana it doesn’t allow the fiery expression and flow of energy to be accessed and expressed via our body. The pranic expression is the source of all emotions, loveless thoughts, actions, behaviours and patterns that keep us in separation from our true soulful nature and expression. The fiery expression brings us awareness of the love that is within us and allows the healing of the deep hurt of separating from our natural loving expression.
Esoteric Yoga teaches us that every movement we make has a certain energetic quality that is determined by our choices in our day to day living. Every choice creates a movement or flow of energy through our body – fiery (soulful) or pranic. What we learn throughout a class is that we have the ability to feel and then choose the quality of energy we move with, what energy feels like in our body and how it affects us and our expression.
